St Charles Hospital, Hospital, Exmoor Street, W10 6DZ
Official description
This Listed Building application is made in conjunction with Application Ref: LB/22/04451. Proposed works include the replacement of the existing wood block flooring with proposed Junckers solid hardwood twin herringbone flooring, within the rooms numbered 00/184 (00/045) and 00/185 (00/045A) at St Charles Centre for Health and Wellbeing. Additionally, it is proposed that the concrete plinth within room 00/185 (00/045A) be removed to allow the aforementioned floor to be level. These works are being undertaken in order to provide new staff rooms in an area of the hospital that has been left vacant for several years. Historic England listing 1235251 states that St Charles was built between 1879-81. The proposed works are within an extended area of the hospital that was constructed between 1914-1935 (according to historical maps). This extension was not built in complete cohesion with the architectural style of the main building, and therefore does not hold the architectural significance that the main hospital does. There is no evidence (that has been found) highlighting that the concrete plinth within room 00/185 (00/045A) holds any form of architectural significance. Rooms 00/184 (00/045) and 00/185 (00/045A) have not been in use for several years, and have consequently incurred long term water ingress from the failing roof. This has led to the condition of the floor deteriorating beyond the point of being retained or repaired. The existing wood block floor is not original to the construction date. The proposed new floor will pay homage to the original wood block flooring and shall be constructed from traditional, hard wearing materials.
