Official description
The mature copper beech tree (TPO reference 00V08), with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of approximately 2 ft 3 in (686 mm), is showing significant signs of deterioration at its base. These include extensive bark peeling, visible cracks in the bark and the presence of Honey Fungus fruiting bodies. The tree is also suspected of being affected by Kretzschmaria deusta, a fungal pathogen associated with the decay of structural wood and roots, which can significantly compromise a tree’s structural integrity. The tree is heavily leaning towards an adjacent bungalow. Given the observed symptoms, the suspected fungal decay and the tree’s pronounced lean, there are serious concerns regarding the condition of its basal structure and root system, and its ability to remain structurally stable. Should the tree fail, its direction of lean places the bungalow directly within the potential impact zone, creating a significant risk of damage to the property and potential danger to occupants. In view of these concerns, the removal of the tree to ground level is requested on safety grounds. (Schedule 2 application under the 2026 Regulations)
