Official description
Rooted in Kensington is an art installation and planting scheme as part of the London Festival of Architecture and Kensington and Chelsea Art Week. Toy Studio and artist MAMIMU in partnership with Opportunity Kensington reimagines the symbolic “missing tree” outside Kensington Central Library, through seating, planting and sculptural signage inspired by underground ecological networks and urban biodiversity. One element is a Pollinator Pathmaker - a living sculpture made of plants created by artist Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg using a custom algorithm that designs for pollinators' tastes, not humans. The installation is designed to enhance this space which was rather "unloved", and celebrate Kensington's diverse history, creating a sense of belonging for all its residents, mini beasts and biodiversity. Constructed of timber panels using professional architects, fabricators and artists, the installation was initially planned as temporary, but due to its popularity we are seeking consent for a semi-permanent structure to demonstrate how we can "Bring the fun back" to Kensington and animate this space which now include specialist weekend markets which have proven popular for residents and visitors alike.
